Research overview <p>My research interests cover a wide range of Earth Science including, rates of geological processes, noble gas geochemistry. I&nbsp;developing several techniques for dating geological processes using the Ar-Ar dating technique. For much of this work I have used focussed lasers, both UV and IR, to melt minute samples to release and measure&nbsp;noble gases in rocks and minerals. Use of laser extraction techniques for Ar-Ar dating has led me into dating a huge range of geological processes including:</p><ul><li>Tectonic movements, uplift and erosion of ancient mountain belts</li><li>Large meteorite impacts on Earth, and also dating processes on other solar system bodies by studing meteorites.</li><li>The eruption of ancient volcanic provinces&nbsp;</li><li>Mineral overgrowths on minerals&nbsp;</li><li>Detrital minerals to investigate the tectonics of source areas and development of sand and mud bodies in sedimentary basins.</li></ul><p>The Ar-Ar dating research group is led by<a href="http://www.open.ac.uk/people/scs35">Sarah Sherlock</a>,&nbsp;to whom any enquiries about collabortions or analysing samples should be directed, the laboratory website is<a href="http://www.open.ac.uk/science/argon-noble-gas-research/">here</a>.</p><p>More recently I&#39;ve been using laser ablation and noble gas mass spectrometry techniques to&nbsp;measure the solubility and diffusivity of noble gases in minerals in the Earth&rsquo;s mantle and crust.</p><p>My research interests&nbsp;extend beyond pure science and include technology enhanced learning and&nbsp;on-line learning tools. I&#39;m involved in&nbsp;projects within the Wolfson OpenScience Laboratory relating to the<a href="http://www.virtualmicroscope.org" rel="nofollow">Virtual Microscope&nbsp;for Earth sciences</a>.</p>
