Research overview	<p>Robin has a background in software engineering, but much of his work is in Music Computing. He is interested in how music works and why it is so significant as a human activity.  His team is exploring this through two approaches:</p><p>1) Computational Musicology - What can pattern matching and statistical approaches tell us about the content of music?</p><p>2) Human-AI Collaborative Systems that allow mixed-ability groups to make music in a meaningful and intentional manner.</p><p>A short video on <em>Open Melody</em>, a human-AI collaborative creative music tool his team has produced, can be found here: </p><p><a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9Qk2q92UtE" rel="nofollow">https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9Qk2q92UtE&feature=youtu.be</a></p><p>Robin has supervised 17 PhD students to successful completion, both in Software Engineering and various topics within Music Computing. He is always keen to hear from perspective PhD students, whether for full or part-time distance study. More generally, he is happy to answer any questions on his research, whether from academics or the general public.</p> <p dir="ltr"><font face="sans-serif"size="2">Robin is a Senior Lecturer in Computing and a member of the</font><a href="http://crc.open.ac.uk/"><font color="#000080"face="sans-serif"size="2"><u>Centre for Research in Computing</u></font></a><font face="sans-serif"size="2">, where he is a coordinator for the Music Computing theme. He is interested in music computing applications that combine statistical techniques such as Markov Chains with novel user interfaces.  He is also involved in the development of shared touchable interfaces, as a way of exploring the social aspects of collaborative creativity.</font><font size="3"></font>To date this has been in the context of music, and climate change education, but he is also interested in its role in housing planning negotiations.<br><br><font face="sans-serif"size="2">His other main research interest is in the field of Requirements Engineering. In particular, he has developed an approach  called Composition Frames. This is an extension to the Problem Frames approach of Professor Michael Jackson and deals with the dynamic composition of software in a requirements-centric way.</font><font size="3"></font><br><br><font face="sans-serif"size="2">Please feel free to contact him if you wish to discuss any aspects of his work. He is particularly open to exploring interdisciplinary areas, and keen to hear from prospective PhD students.</font>From time to time the OU has funding for Full-time PhD studentships, and Part-time, self-funded study is also possible.</p>
