Biography
I am a Staff Tutor and Lecturer in History, and am currently Director of Teaching for the School of Arts and Humanities. Having worked at several traditional universities between 2005 and 2016, I am very happy to be here at the OU now. That’s because adult learners are definitely the best kind of student to work with!

As a historian I look at the ways in which ideas about the past, especially the Middle Ages, have helped to shape national identities in Britain from the eighteenth century to the present day. As a teacher I am interested in enabling distance learning students to work together rather than in isolation, whilst at the same time giving them greater choice about how and what they study.

Career History

Staff Tutor and Lecturer (History)– Open University, 2016-present

Senior Lecturer (Online Learning)– Cardiff Metropolitan University, 2014-2016

Lecturer and Pathway Coordinator (History)– Cardiff University, 2011-2014

Research Associate (Humanities)– University of South Wales, 2010-2011

Associate Lecturer (Arts)– Open University, 2009-2012

Sessional Lecturer (Humanities)– Cardiff Metropolitan University, 2007-2010

Sessional Lecturer (History)– Cardiff University, 2006-2009

Registry Officer– Cardiff Metropolitan University, 2005-2008

Qualifications

PhD in Modern History– University of Glasgow, 2010

MA in Medieval History– Cardiff University, 2001

BA in History– Cardiff University, 1999

Research overview
I am really interested in how ideas about history and heritage inform notions of identity. My research in that area has tended to focus on the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, especially in relation to Sxcotland and Wales. Click the'publications' tab for details

Recently, however, I won a£37,500 grant from UKRI to work with community members in the South Wales Valley in exploring their own sense of heritage and identity through the creative arts. This project is called'BG Reach' (Blaenau Gwent Residents Engaging in Arts, Community and Heritage), and will culminate in an interactive echibition to be toured around Wales and beyond.

I am strongly committed to taking research beyond academia. In 2018 I founded the OU History Lecture Series, which opens a window onto the exciting research being conducted by historians at the Open University. I have also written for various newspapers, magazines and websites, made radio appearances, and delivered numerous public lectures and workshops.
