He is a Liveryman of the Worship Company of Information Technologists and has chaired their Education and Training Committee.&nbsp;</p><div>&nbsp;</div></div>

overview <p dir="ltr"><span style="color: rgb(51, 51, 51); font-family: Tahoma, 'Lucida Grande', Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; font-size: 12.499999046325684px; line-height: 19.200000762939453px;">Dr Jon Hall is a Senior Lecturer in Computing and Communications at the Open University. His research portfolio includes some very well-known organisations including Siemens, The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation, General Dynamics UK, and BAE Systems. Until recently, he was a governor of his son&rsquo;s school, and still works closely with the Computing Department there developing teaching materials to complement the AS and A-level curriculum. He chairs the BCS Effective Leadership in IT group, a lively group of&gt;3500 industry and academic IT thought leaders, is a Fellow of BCS, a Fellow of IARIA, a Chartered Information Technology Professional (with Certificate of Current Competence), a Chartered Engineer, a Chartered Scientist and a Freeman of the WCIT. He edits Wiley&#39;s Expert Systems, the Journal of Knowledge Engineering.</span><br><br><font face="serif"size="3">&nbsp;</font></p>
Research overview
  • <p dir="ltr">My research sees software engineering as a socially situated design problem solving process within which creativity and expertise come together to solve real-world problems by satisfying a wide range of stakeholders.   • <p>Jon Hall is a leading research scientist in problem solving with over 100 peer reviewed publications. He has extensive experience in designing, leading and evaluating research programmes in many fields, including organisational change, fin tech, safety-critical systems, and project management and has a long history of delivering excellent value to business. He has successfully chaired many scientific, governance and leadership committees and boards, and provided business evaluations for many companies. His work has influenced industrial practice both directly and through contributions to international standards.</p><p>&nbsp;</p><p>In terms of his personal research, Jon began his scientific career as a logician in Newcastle and York Universities,&nbsp;conducting research on engineering alongside Professor John McDermid, FREng, one of the leading proponents of the use of mathematics in engineering. After researching logic for many years, Jon began to apply the techniques to software engineering and then more broadly across engineering, finding deep links between ostensibly different areas. His most recent research explores problem solving structures that bridge the chasm between agile and plan-driven approaches to solving complex problems holding out the hope that wicked problems, previously unsolvable, will soon be effectively understood and treatable.</p>
