Detroit was once America's fourth largest city. Built by the car for the car, with its groundbreaking suburbs, freeways and shopping centres, it was the embodiment of the American dream. But its intense race riots brought the Army into the city. With violent union struggles against the fierce resistance of Henry Ford and the Big Three, it was also the scene of American nightmares. Now it is truly a dystopic post-industrial city, in which 40% of the land in the centre is returning to prairie. Greenery grows up through abandoned office blocks, houses, and collapsing car plants, and swallows up street lights. But there is hope. Streets are being turned to art. Farming is coming back to the centre of the city. Young people are flocking to help. The burgeoning urban agricultural movement is the fastest growing movement in the US. Detroit leads the way again but in a very different direction. When Stephen Downing was cleared by the Court of Appeal last year, his case was hailed as one of the greatest miscarriages of justice in British criminal history.  Now police in Derbyshire say they may have been right all along.  Their six month inquiry has found that he's still the prime suspect.   Downing spent twenty seven years in jail for killing Wendy Sewell in 1973.

This series was commissioned to support the Health and Social Care faculty priority of ‘youth justice’ and the Faculty of Education and Languages priority of Childhood and Youth Studies. Dr. Richard Hester and Prof. Mary Jane Kehily are the academic consultants on the series for The Open University. The first episode, “Robbed” looks at the consequences of teenage robbing sprees that spiral out of control. It will be repeated on Tuesday at 12.30 am on BBC3 and BBC HD, then again on Wednesday at 03.55 am on BBC3 and Thursday at 02.00 am on BBC3. This new four-part series for BBC 3 will seek to explore youth crime in Britain by delving behind the shocking images caught on camera to unpack and re-tell these criminal scenes through the voices of those involved – both victims and perpetrators. In a bold stock-take of the criminal behaviour of Generation Y, this innovative new series will utilise CCTV surveillance footage, alongside the self-shot UGC of perpetrators and bystanders, to piece together how the unfolding unlawful events took place. This series will draw on frank interviews with those captured on film, to uncover just what was really going on in these scenes of violence and misdemeanour; seeking to answer the wider questions of why young people are driven to commit criminal acts, what the lines are between rowdy teen behaviour and criminality, and just what the long-term effects of crime on the victim and their loved ones are. ,0http://data.open.ac.uk/videofinder/program/82515/http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#type=http://data.open.ac.uk/videofinder/ontology/VideofinderObject,0http://data.open.ac.uk/videofinder/program/82515 http://purl.org/dc/terms/created< 2014-10-08(%http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#date,0http://data.open.ac.uk/videofinder/program/82515http://purl.org/dc/terms/title<en,0http://data.open.ac.uk/videofinder/program/82515-http://www.w3.org/2004/02/skos/core#prefLabel<,0http://data.open.ac.uk/videofinder/program/825156http://data.open.ac.uk/videofinder/ontology/object/flv<Shttp://videofinder.open.ac.uk/sites/videofinder.open.ac.uk/files/programs/82515.flv('http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#anyURI,0http://data.open.ac.uk/videofinder/program/82515http://purl.org/media#duration<9' 28",0http://data.open.ac.uk/videofinder/program/82515A politician displaying very poor presentation skills.

Professor Jeremy Black examines one of the most extraordinary periods in British history: the Industrial Revolution. He explains the unique economic, social and political conditions that by the 19th century, led to Britain becoming the richest, most powerful nation on Earth. It was a time that transformed the way people think, work and play forever.

He traces the unprecedented explosion of new ideas and technological inventions that transformed Britain's agricultural society into an increasingly industrial and urbanised one. The documentary explores two fascinating questions - why did the industrial revolution happen when it did, and why did it happen in Britain?

Professor Black discusses the reasons behind this transformation - from Britain's coal reserves, which gave it a seemingly inexhaustible source of power, to the ascendency of political liberalism, with engineers and industrialists able to meet and share ideas and inventions. He explains the influence that geniuses like Josiah Wedgewood had on the consumer revolution and travels to Antigua to examine the impact Britain's empire had on this extraordinary period of growth.

Can Inuit people survive the Arctic cold thanks to deep past liaisons with another species? Adam Rutherford talks to geneticist Rasmus Nielsen who says that's part of the answer. His team's research has identified a particular section of the Inuit people's genome which looks as though it originally came from a long extinct population of humans who lived in Siberia 50,000 years ago. The genes concerned are involved in physiological processes advantageous to adapting to the cold. The conclusion is that at some point, the ancestors of Inuits interbred with members of this other species of human (known as the Denisovans) before people arrived in Greenland.

Also in the programme:

The woodlice which are made either female or male because of a gene that once belonged a bacterium. The gene came from a dead microbe and was incorporated by chance into the woodlouse genome. This is the first known instance of the invention of an animal sex chromosome through bacterial donation. We talk to Richard Cordaux of the University of Poitiers and Nick Lane of University College London about the discovery.

Peace through particle physics. Roland Pease visits SESAME in Jordan - the Middle East's first synchrotron facility is about to start operating. The experiment brings together scientists from all over the Middle East in common cause, with for example Israeli, Palestinian, Iranian, Egyptian and Turkish scientists working side by side.

Marine ecologist Autun Purser tells Adam about his European team's discovery of ghostly octopods living at 4,000 metres on the dark, cold sea bed of the Pacific ocean. Autun's camera has caught extraordinary egg brooding behaviour by this new kind of octopus. It lays its eggs half way up the stalks of dead sponges and then guards them for several years until they hatch. Unfortunately, the  sponges only grow on lumps of metal-rich rock called manganese nodules which form slowly on the deep sea floor. Several companies are now exploring the possibility of extracting vast quantities of these nodules in deep sea mining, threatening the existence of the sponges and the octopods depending on them.

Thomas Edison was the most prolific engineer who ever lived. He was committed to electricity a& a form of power and created the first commercial electric networks. But he was an inventor who's working methods were a far cry from normal research. We explore the turns of fortune that lay behind Edison's improvements to the light bulb. Why did Edison think a wild platinum mining venture would seal the success of the bulb? And how close did it really come to destroying his naisent empire.

In the last ten minutes Peter Evans speaks to Sir John Harvey Jones about the current state of British industry.

Exploitation of people in privately rented accommodation exemplified by Rachman (Rachmanism), who in order to maximize his rental income from the properties in Notting Hill, is said to have driven out the mostly white sitting tenants, who had statutory protection against high rent increases, and then filled the properties with recent immigrants from the West Indies. The gentrification of North London, Islington and the middle class invasion. Homelessness, Newington Lodge as housing for homeless mothers and children, the influence of the TV documentary ‘Cathy come home’ and the work of the charity Shelter. The organization of housing, the housing associations whose aim is to provide housing for the low income families. The Notting Hill housing trust, government money going into improving old property rather than new development. Can housing associates cope with the volume of demand without using high rise tower blocks? Birmingham, learning from the mistakes of the high rise flats they had built, embarked on a plan of refurbishment of old inner city properties through ‘enveloping’, improving the outsides of privately rented housing en mass – residents contribute according to their means. Northern Ireland, housing since the late 60s. Sectarian discrimination in the allocation of council housing, housing had become politicized. Northern Island housing executive formed, a single all-purpose housing authority for Northern Ireland. Poleglass estate, built to Parker Morris standards of planning and design – questions about its future, community infrastructure and jobs needs to be established. Community architecture projects, example of Lee View in Hackney, resident led re-design and development. Interview with resident and John Thompson architect. ,0http://data.open.ac.uk/videofinder/program/83837/http://www.w3.org/1999/02/22-rdf-syntax-ns#type=http://data.open.ac.uk/videofinder/ontology/VideofinderObject,0http://data.open.ac.uk/videofinder/program/83837 http://purl.org/dc/terms/created< 2014-10-08(%http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#date,0http://data.open.ac.uk/videofinder/program/83837http://purl.org/dc/terms/title<en,0http://data.open.ac.uk/videofinder/program/83837-http://www.w3.org/2004/02/skos/core#prefLabel<,0http://data.open.ac.uk/videofinder/program/838376http://data.open.ac.uk/videofinder/ontology/object/flv<Shttp://videofinder.open.ac.uk/sites/videofinder.open.ac.uk/files/programs/83837.flv('http://www.w3.org/2001/XMLSchema#anyURI,0http://data.open.ac.uk/videofinder/program/83837http://purl.org/media#duration<00:39:31,0http://data.open.ac.uk/videofinder/program/83837This clip demonstrates how the Ford Motor Co. went from building cars one by one, using skilled, master craftsmen, to automating the process with an assembly line of de-skilled labourers, a system modelled on Frederick Taylor's notion of scientific management. A research facility at Harwell, Oxfordshire, UK, called the Diamond Light Source, uses diffraction to study the internal structure of an object. This short film shows the science behind the giant synchrotron machine and the intense beams of light it produces.

Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall is on a mission to change the way we think about waste, by challenging supermarkets and the fast food industry to drastically reduce the amount of waste they generate. We live in a country where one third of the food we produce never gets eaten, and the average family bins £700-worth of food a year. Hugh believes something needs to be done.
This video has excerpts of Episodes 1 and 2 edited together to show when Hugh heads to a parsnip farm in Norfolk, where he uncovers the truth about the supermarkets' strict cosmetic standards, which means that any slightly imperfect fruit or veg gets rejected. In his bid to reduce the mountain of food waste that is being generated on Britain's farms due to supermarkets' strict cosmetic standards, Hugh gathers evidence from that farm in Norfolk and prepares to take it to one of the big four supermarkets.

The Galapagos Islands are famous for inspiring Charles Darwin to form his Theory of Evolution based on the biodiversity he'd observed there.
Some of the plants and animals that live here are found nowhere else on Earth. Today that biodiversity is under threat from an increasing population, tourism and invasive non-native species. The video tracks on this album retraces Darwin's first steps on the Galapagos islands, looks at some of the species that fascinated him, and at how threats to the environment are being managed.

In this last film in the series, the focus shifts to the United States in the post-war years of the 1950s and beyond. Beginning with arguably the most notorious work of 20th century classical music, John Cage’s ‘silent’ composition 4’33”, it looks at how a series of maverick Americans re-invented the sound of classical music into a more simple form, bringing back harmonies and rhythms that made it increasingly popular with audiences across the world. It also examines how this music found its way into a spiritual realm, with the strain of pared-down religious composition that came to be known as ‘holy minimalism’. From the Maverick concert hall in Woodstock, New York to an Orthodox Cathedral in Estonia to a car park in Peckham, South London, the story is told by a stellar line-up of contributors, including Philip Glass, Steve Reich, John Adams, Arvo Pärt and John Tavener.

Only three of her babies survived the dangerously premature births and they are now being cared for in Neonatal Intensive Care. She receives a visit from the hospital's overseas officer Terry whose job it is to prepare her for a huge bill. Because she is not a British resident, she must pay for the care that she and her babies are receiving. The cost of such specialist care quickly tops £100,000 and looks likely to rise to half a million pounds during their stay. Terry explains that, despite her distressing predicament, it is a legal requirement for the hospital to collect the money the NHS is owed. "We have to start raising invoices on a weekly basis. She has three babies in ICU. So that’s £20,000 a week for each baby, plus her own charges as well."

"You have to distance yourself emotionally. Otherwise you wouldn’t get the job done."

The woman is just one of a number of overseas patients who are receiving life-saving care and from whom the hospital must now try to recoup money. Although emergency treatment given in A&E is free, non-UK residents who are admitted to a ward have to be billed. Terry also needs to charge Sonia, a 56 year old woman from the Philippines who suffers heart problems while visiting her sister, who is a UK resident. Cardio-Thoracic surgeon Rex Stanbridge saves her life, but she suffers complications and needs a bed in Intensive Care - costing thousands of pounds per day.

In 2015/16 the Trust’s overseas patient charges were £4million, with Terry’s team managing to collect £1.6million. Despite carrying a credit card machine to take on-the-spot payments, Terry finds it hard to get many patients to pay up.

NASA space capsule Orion that could transport humans to Mars is due to make its maiden flight. Given that this is a first outing, there will be no people aboard. The capsule will orbit the earth twice in four and a half hours, before splashing down in the Pacific. BBC reporter Jon Amos is on location at the Cape Canaveral and speaks to Adam.

Fake Mars trip

Orion is a step towards a crewed mission to Mars. But how do humans cope with being confined for the 8 months it takes to get there? The European Space Agency studied this in 2010. 6 volunteers were shut up in a replica space shuttle for over a year. Engineer Diego Urbina was one of them. He shares his thoughts on taking part in a fake mars mission.

XDNA

Philipp Holliger from the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology in Cambridge heads the team that has, two years ago, built XNA, a set of genetic molecules that behave just like DNA, but are man-made. Like DNA, those XNAs didn’t actually do that much, but this week, the team has published a paper where they have got them working. These are the first synthetic enzymes on Earth.

Richard III's skeleton

Back in 2012, a shallow grave was uncovered underneath a car park in Leicester. Evidence suggested it was King Richard the third. Finally this week, the DNA confirmation by geneticist Turi King is in. And something is rotten in the state if his lineage. Kevin Schurer, historian and Richard Buckley, the lead archaeologist on the dig talk us through the DNA anomaly that hints at infidelity in the royal line.

Programmes three is programme four from the last series (T003) and is extended by 10 minutes to incorporate an interview with Fred Dibnah.

Thomas Telford is regarded as the father of civil engineering. But the Society of Civil Engineers had been founded before he had even joined the profession. We explore Telford's relationship with a less known contemporary engineer called William Jessop and find that although Jessop wasTelford'^s senior on key works in Telford's early career, Jessop has been lost from popular acclaim".. When Telford wrote his autobiography he hardly mentioned Jessop. Did Telford's ego get the better of him or was he simply forgetful? We might never know. But that autobiography became the main source of future biography and built the Telford myth.
