Urban rural relationships
This is the third programme in a series of eight and, like all the others, is divided into three case studies filmed on location in the cities of Vancouver, British Columbia; Cracow, Poland and Birmingham, U.K. The theme of this programme is urban/rural relationships. In Cracow we examine the phenomenon of worker/peasants - those who live on rural farms and commute into Cracow for urban employment opportunities. In Vancouver, we look at the gradual dispersal of population throughout the Greater Vancouver Regional District and consider what pressures this places on land use planning in the area. In the case of Birmingham, we feature the post-war expansion of the city and in particular the pressures it has generated for building land on the periphery of the city. This programme has been re-made to include an updating postscript. Allan Cochrane, acting Course Team Chairman, explains the significance of recent events in Poland.
