All of these workshops led to continuing work on the hill by the Bailies of Bennachie, wider community groups and by the University of Aberdeen. Work continues to this day and under a follow-up AHRC grant
As part of the grant we ran a series of workshops in Summer 2012, these included:
Introduction to Archaeological Research Techniques:
May 5th & 6th 2012
Here community members were invited to help investigate the remains of the 'Colony of Bennachie' archaeological site. Guided tours with the Ranger were also organized.
June 2nd: A workshop was organized to look at a
selection of artefacts discovered by the archaeological investigations
on the hill and we dicuseed what they told us about the lives of the 19th
century 'Colonists'.
May 10th & 11th: Two training days of
archaeological survey and recording were hosted by the RCAHMS.
Methods of site recording used by the RCAHMS was demonstrated
in a 'hands-on' workshop.
Community Oral History:
June 9th : A training day was held for those interested in recording
oral history in their area.
June 23rd: A oral memory sharing workshop was held. Internet and
Skype linked the people of Bennachie with the families from the
area now scattered around the World.
Discovering the Archives Exhibition:
June 18th - July 27th at the University Library, Aberdeen:
A small exhibition was held on how historic documents can be used to shed light on places in the
landscape and the social history of the north-east.
The Landscape, Local Heritage and Opportunities for
Outdoor Learning:
2nd June: An exhibition was held by Oyne Primary School demonstrating
the results of their archaeological and documentary research into the
history of their parish carried out during April and May of that year.
June 7th: Exhibition by Keig Primary School
demonstrated the results of their archaeological and documentary
research into their parish history carried out during April and May.
Exploring Heritage through the Creative Arts:
June 16th: A creative music workshop at the Bennachie Centre was held and an interactive sound
map of the recordings created.
